Hope for Miami has been designated as a recipient of toys for children from the University of Miami staff and students. Additionally, we will be soliciting donated toys from other sources in order to serve as many children as possible.
Parents would be invited to come “shop” at the Toy Store which will be set up by volunteers. Parents pay a $1 fee for each toy they select from their children, with a limit of one per child to expand the number of families served. Children are served in a separate room with games or a craft (or outdoors if the weather is pleasant) – with the idea that they don’t see what their parents are doing in the Toy Store.
Volunteer Duties:
- Set-up the tables for the Store (in a separate room from the children’s area) from 3:30 – 5 PM
- Registration (capturing the parent attendee information and obtaining photo permission) and collecting the $1 fee per child.
- Wrapping and labeling the toys for the family to take home.
- Escorting the parents to their vehicle in a plastic bag (so that the toys can be a surprise to their children).
- Play games or do a Christmas craft with the children while their parents are “shopping.”
- Organize a snack – could be individual packets of Christmas cookies and a juice box or something similar (and COVID safe)
- Photographer/videographer
- Break down and re-setting up the room the way it was.
Date and Time:
Friday, December 10th, volunteers needed for set-up from 3:30 PM until the parents arrive at 4 PM – 6 PM. Clean-up shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes. Community Service hours earned: 3 hours.
Hope Toy Store Locations:
There are three locations that this event is taking place. One is in Cutler Bay, FL; another location is in Hialeah; and the last location is near West Kendall. The locations must remain private, so please email Scott Maurer at scott@hopeformiami.org for exact location.
