Common Threads is a National Nonprofit Organization that is focused on delivering and cultivating cooking and nutrition curriculum for kids to create lifelong healthy eating habits and fight the obesity epidemic. Our motto is “America’s Kids Cooking for Life.” Our focus is on 3rd through 8th grade students that attend schools in underserved areas of Miami-Dade. We currently offer our program in 40 Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
What We Do
- After-School Cooking Skills & World Cuisine Class: We teach 10-week after-school cooking classes at 30 schools all over Miami-Dade County. Each class has 1 Chef Instructor and 4 volunteers. We ask schools to find their own volunteers (at least one of whom will be a teacher from the school), but many schools need help in this area. We jump in to connect our volunteers with schools in need.
Commitment: 10 weeks, 1 day per week, 2-hours. ***
- Timeframe: Typically falls between 2-6 pm, Monday –Thursday.
- Your role: As a volunteer, you will lead a group of 4-6 students through cooking their day’s recipes. We partner with schools and work all over Miami-Dade County. Our main areas of volunteering needs are in Carol City, Liberty City, Overtown, and North Miami."
-We also have volunteer opportunities doing office/clerical work.
