The Gold Coast Railroad Museum (GRCM) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1957. The museum was built on the former Naval Air Station Richmond (NASR). With over 3 miles of tracks the old base was an ideal place to build a railroad museum. GCRM became one of three official state railroad museums in 1984. Our purpose is to preserve railroad history. GCRM promotes historical trains and railroads. It houses over 40 historic trains. The museum strives to teach railroad history with the use of artifacts, movies and railroad materials. Weekend train rides allow guests to board vintage trains and get a taste of the past. Exhibits include: the Presidential rail car "Ferdinand Magellan". The Western Pacific "Silver Crescent", Engine Steam 153, model railroad layouts (N, HO, 027, and G) and Thomas Play Tables.
What We Do
-General Administrative Volunteer: Volunteers will interact with the public by assisting in the museum store, act as docent for the tours, monitor the model train exhibit, assist with some computer work and assist with the general functioning of the museum. Hours vary by volunteer
_Specially Skilled Volunteer: Volunteers will work on specially designed and time limited projects related to updating the history and marketing of the museum. Specifically create multiple videos to be used on social media platforms, photograph the guests and volunteers as they visit and work at the museum, update the recorded history of the museum and all equipment, design a curriculum for teachers and docents to use with youth visitors.
-Operations Volunteer: maintain grounds and buildings by participating in regular maintenance checks, painting equipment & buildings, sprucing up gardens and grounds.
-Train Volunteer: Individuals can work and run the trains. Individuals are encouraged to request information on becoming a crew member. Operating a train is very thrilling and a big responsibility therefore potential volunteers are required to participate in over 20 hours of extensive training to become a Crew Member.
